Gainesville/Alachua County, Florida
On June 13, 2014 CHW and the City of Gainesville celebrated the Grand Opening of the new SW 3rd Avenue and SW 9th Street @ Innovation Square!
The SW 3rd Avenue project was designed concurrently with the SW 9th Street project to divide the Innovation Square, formerly the Alachua General Hospital site, into 4 quadrants. Subdividing this parcel establishes Innovation Square (I2) as the seed for the redevelopment of the Gainesville Innovation District. The 3rd Avenue portion of the project consisted of 750 linear feet of road running from SW 10th Street to SW 7th Terrace. It provides an urban corridor including curb, landscape and hardscape zones, pedestrian zones, utility mains, and stormwater improvements. Locating the majority of utility and other support infrastructure on SW 3rd Avenue allowed SW 9th Street to begin a green corridor parks and walk able corridors running north and south within the district. To limit its environmental impacts, stormwater runoff is proposed to be treated either partially or totally within the proposed right of way; without the need for a traditional stormwater pond.
